WHY I´M HAPPY IN THE
WORLD - UTSTILLING
INTERNASJONAL UTSTILLING
Tirsdag 21. sept. var det duket for en kunstbegivenhet på Huseby
skole: Åpningen av utstillinga "Why I´m happy in the world". Til stede
på utstillingen, som ble åpnet av Slovakias ambassadør i Norge, Andrej
Sokolik, var elever, lærere og besøkende.
"Why I´m happy in the world" har i løpet av de siste ti åra utviklet
i parlamentet i Bratislava, Slovakia, for sitt bidrag til
utstillingen. Maria var eneste deltaker utenfor Slovakia som deltok på
åpningen i Bratislava og fikk tildelt prisen av landets
kulturminister. På åpningen i dag viste Maria en film hun hadde laget.

I’ve been asked to give some background
information about the exhibition ”Why I’m happy in the world”. What we
know today as a world wide network, started out as an initiative by the
Slovak minister of Culture in 1994. The aim then, as it still is today,
was to focus on the positive values in life, as part of the struggle
against drug addiction.
The project has been conducted on several levels:
• National art competitions
• Travelling reruns of the exhibitions
• National and international exhibitions
Within this frame, thousands of Slovak and foreign students and pupils
between the age of 14 to 18 have expressed their attitude towards drugs
and drug addiction, by the means of different graphic and plastic art
activities, such as painting, drawing, collagemaking, poster- and
postcard design, just to mention some of the categories.
Many of the participating institutions have been schools, and each
institution has been allowed to send 10 contributions to the
international competitions arranged every year since 1994. Winners
within each category have then been invited to the official opening of
the exhibition in Bratislava. Huseby school was extremely proud to be
represented at this year’s official opening, with Maria’s contribution.
The winning designs serve every year as patterns for t-shirts, baseball
caps, posters, calendars, postcards, keyrings and other artefacts. All
of these different artefacts help to promote the project, and they are
also used as awards for the best participants.
The project “Why I’m happy in the world”, is one of several activities
focusing on the prevention of unwanted effects of today’s society. On
several occasions, the high artistic level of the graphic and plastic
works has been stressed by people commenting on the exhibitions. This
has undoubtedly inspired all the organisers and, not to mention, the
young artists in the different participating countries to do their very
best.
The final exhibitions have, up to now, been presented in four continents.
They have been seen in Hungary, Belgium, Austria, Great Britain,
Finland, USA, Australia and Uzbekistan, in addition to Norway and of
course Slovakia.
Throughout the last 10 years the project has confirmed its
extraordinarity, uniqueness and the necessary survival capacities.
Graphic and plastic art as a way of expressing an attitude towards
drugs, not meeting any of the well known language barriers, has spoken
its message to all young people with the appeal of a world without
drugs.
When attending the exhibition yourselves, in just a few moments, you
will witness how the results of systematic work of many art teachers,
the experiences of cultural workers, and the creative potential of young
people have been capitalised. In my point of view, this exhibition
demonstrates clearly the value and the importance of the project itself.
It confirms that creativity is one of the most precious gifts man has
received.
